Official records of the vineyards around Frankenberg Castle date back many centuries ago. The Louisenberg, Hölle and Wolfsgrube sites are located on open slopes facing south and west and are planted primarily with Riesling, Pinot Blanc, but also with the exceptional Blauer Sylvaner. On these slopes the vines are privy to many hours of sunshine to produce the best grapes for harvesting.
The philosophy of our winery guarantees sustainable cultivation of the soil, careful selection during the harvest and gentle use of cellar technology. This results in classic white wines full of elegance and body. The castle wines are filled in Alsace bottles, designed according to traditional styles.
- Where the ocean meets the mountains
The south-african property is uniquely situated between the Helderberg Mountains and False Bay. At this point of convergence, the vineyards are cooled by a fresh sea breeze, which fills the fertile soil with maritime character and allows the grapes to ripen more slowly. This distinctive terroir is one of the distinctive aspects giving the wines their exceptional taste.
The winery is one of the oldest operating farms in South Africa. The land rights were granted in 1696. The gracious Cape Dutch Homestead dates to 1773 and is still celebrated as a national monument.
